Comfort and Style with the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4

[Untitled]
When one mentions the word chaise lounge, the first thing that usually comes into mind is comfort. Also known in its proper French term chaise longue or long chair, the chaise lounge is a special upholstered couch shaped like a chair that is long enough to support the legs of the occupant. With its design, the chaise lounge is perfect for those long summer days where you can take a quick nap without having to go to the bedroom. In addition, chaise lounges can also be stylish as well as comfortable, as these couches have long been the canvas of designers especially during the 20th century. One such fine example of a stylish 20th century lounge chair is the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4.

Considered to be one the best known Le Corbusier furniture designs, the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 is a lounge chair as furnishing for the villa in the Ville d’Avray commune in Paris. It was designed by the renowned Swiss-French architect and designer Le Corbusier, who was known for creating furnishings and structures that are both ergonomic and minimalist in nature. The chaise lounge was then exhibited in public for the first time at the Salon D’ Automne in 1929, where it had a positive reception.

To further emphasize its minimalist nature, the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 is made up basically of only two materials: metal and leather. Tubular steel plated with a layer of chrome comprises the frame of the chaise lounge, and the upholstery is covered with rich grain leather. Some high-end versions of the LC4 have high quality leather that is treated aniline, enhancing its properties. Also, the chaise lounge was generally made either in black or pony hide, but modern reproductions of the chaise lounge come in many different colors and styles. Cheaper reproductions of the Le Corbusier LC4 replace the leather with fabric.

Another significant feature of the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 is that it can be adjusted by moving the whole element of the seat within its separate support frame. And to ensure quality, LC4 couches are worked almost entirely by hand, including the chroming process and the polishing. The welds are also ground to impeccable smoothness and polished before it is chrome-plated. Rubber straps are also added for additional support as well as make the entire structure more durable. And to withstand wear from constant use, the upholstery is reinforced by double edge stitching and welting on the mat.
